The French Press uses a plunger to press the mixture of coffee and water and extract the oils and flavours from the coffee. The coffee powder or the solid part of the mixture is enclosed in a beaker while the plunger is pressed down. A fine mesh on the plunger prevents the ground coffee from escaping, so only the flavour passes through the filter. The result is a coffee where you absorb more flavours and essential oils from coffee than with filtered coffee, as the coffee and water mix instead of passing through the paper filter. However, some residue from the ground bean may pass through the plunger and leave a coffee grounds in the coffee cup.
